A large monument honoring John Fredrick Young who drowned while rescuing a young child, is located in the east side of King's Square in uptown St. John, New Brunswick.

The Young Monument was erected, by public subscription, on the King's Square in honor of John Frederick Young who drowned on October 30, 1890 while trying to save 10 year old Freddie Mundee. The stone monument is about 8' square and 20' high. The monument rises to form a dome topped with a black iron cross.
The east face contains a zinc plaque with the inscription:
ERECTED AS A PUBLIC MEMORIAL
TO
JOHN FREDERICK YOUNG
WHO IN THE 19TH YEAR OF HIS AGE LOST HIS LIFE ON THE
THIRTIETH DAY OF OCTOBER A.D. 1890
IN COURTENAY BAY SAINT JOHN NEW BRUNSWICK,
WHILE ENDEAVORING TO RESCUE FREDERICK E. MUNDEE FROM DROWNING.
"GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIEND."
Below is inscribed in raised capital letters YOUNG.
On the back, there is a representation of the rescue above the raised inscription YOUNG and on the other two sided there is a sculpture of an angel.
