John Thomas was born in Wales on May 19th 1815 and arrived in Western Australia, with his parents, on the Gilmore, 15 December 1829, the founding year of the State. He spent the next few years farming after which he took on a new venture of fishing to provide food for the colony, eventually building a ship big enough to sail to Singapore, trading sandalwood for tea sugar and rice. On his return from Singapore some years later the ship encountered a cyclone off Christmas Island and after getting the jury-rigged ship back to Fremantle once again returned to farming near Pinjarra. Upon his retirement he spent his last years in Fremantle
