At the site of the chapel Cappella di Santa Maria, there once was a Roman villa rustica with small thermae, the ruins of which can be found adjacent to the chapel. In a later period, the thermae were used for Christian services dedicated to St. Mary. Therefore, also today a modern chapel can be found close by. Excavation of the site took place from 1980-1982.
Unfortunately, the ruins of the thermae seem not to be in a good condition, the structure has crudely been patched with bricks in several places and one of the walls has collapsed compared to older pictures we have seen of the site. Yet, the remains are still interesting, and the original purpose and appearance can well be envisioned.
If somebody provided an Italian description, we would be glad to put it here.
