The Alta power plant has two generators of 100MW and 50MW each and is located 40 kilometers from the mouth of the River Alta. The river receives water from a major part of the Finnarksvidda Mountain Plateau. However, at the base, which is the lower portion of the river, is a large salmon population and in the beginning of this project, there was a group of people who objected to the construction of this power plant.
In the summer of 1970, a thousand protesters tried to stop construction. Most of the protesters, were the Sami people whose land would be flooded, and would have to be relocated to another part of Norway.
