From 1776 to 1783 the "Paradeplatz" was the central rendezvous place for Hesse subsidary forces which fought until 1783 in the American War of Independence from 1775 on the British side. The fortress served during this time on the orders of Landgrave Friedrich II. of Hesse-Kassel as a recruiting depot. The Landgrave of Hesse transferred a total of 12,000 troops from here against subsidies to the British for their war in North America.

The Monument remembers of the "unknown Hesse", fought in this war.
