This Art*O*Mat, a re-purposed cigarette vending machine, is located in the Whole Foods Market at Water Tower Square in West Des Moines. It is easily found in the front of the store near the floral counter. $5.00 will buy one of a variety of original one-of-a-kind art productions created by local artists. It is part of the “Green” mission to which Whole Foods adheres and is the second such machine in Iowa. The machine has an explanation with the text: “Founded in 1997, Artists in Cellophane is an arts group that converts retired cigarette machines into functioning art installations. Inside of this machine are original works of art as well as crafts, writings, conceptual thoughts, and unique ideas.” Some examples of art are: mini-acrylic paintings, porcelain buttons, ink drawings, mixed media, collages, mini-books, and Celtic knot art.
