EN: This fountain was built 1758 as a dug well. The center part is roofed with a small dome to protect the water from contamination. In 1845 it was connected to the water supply and converted into a fountain, but the well was still open until 1901. As this was the last dug well in Basel, already in 1869 there were discussion about how to protect it for future generations. In 1964 it was completely renovated.
This is one of very few fountains in Basel, that still is the original, most other historic fountains have been replaced by copies.
DE: Dieser Brunnen wurde 1758 als Sodbrunnen gebaut. Der mittlere Teil ist mit einer kleinen Kuppel überdacht, um das Wasser vor Verunreinigungen zu schützen. Im Jahre 1845 wurde es an die Wasserversorgung angeschlossen und zu einem fliessenden Brunnen, aber der Sodbrunnen blieb noch bis 1901 geöffnet. Da dies der letzte Sodbrunnen Basel war, gab es bereits im Jahre 1869 Diskussionen darüber, ihn für die Nachwelt zu erhalten. Im Jahr 1964 wurde es komplett renoviert.
Dies ist einer der wenigen Brunnen in Basel, der noch im Original an Ort und Stelle ist, die meisten anderen historischen Brunnen wurden durch Kopien ersetzt.
