In the peat area boasts many original bridge and lock keeper houses. One of the most monumental examples of this former lock keeper's house on the Munnekemoer Barnflair in the village, south of Ter Apel.
The house dates from 1875 and is built in rich eclectic style, with a jutting porch. Above the tall windows stucco moldings have been made. The gable is a 17th century brick bricked with a representation of the coat of arms of the city of Groningen, a double-headed eagle with a shield with green bar. This plaque is from the demolished in 1874 Waag building on the Grote Markt in Groningen. On the initiative of the city council weapon stone was transferred to the lock keeper's house in Barnflair said power symbolizing the city of Groningen had in this area as the owner of the Stadskanaal and Ter Apeler Channel with its many bridges and locks.
The lock keeper's house is still used as a residence, but the lift lock is replaced by a modern concrete structure.
