The Children's Peace Memorial in Hiroshima, Japan, which was inspired by a young girl who died from the aftereffects of radiation exposure. The bronze statue on top is of a young girl holding over her head a paper crane, which symbolizes the hope of all children for a peaceful future.

The peace monument of children (Japanese: ? ? ? ? ? ?, Genbaku no ko no Zo, literally "Children Statue of the atomic bomb") is a peace monument to commemorate Sadako Sasaki and the thousands of child victims the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and is located in the grounds of Peace Memorial itself in the city of Hiroshima. Directed by Kazuo Kikuchi and Kiyoshi Ikebe artists, the monument was built using money from a fund-raising campaign by the Japanese school children whose Sadako's classmates, with the main statue entitled the child A bomb that was unveiled May 5, 1958 (the day of the children in Japan). Sadako is immortalized at the top of the monument, which she holds in her hands a crane. Thousands of paper cranes worldwide are deposited daily around the monument, as according to an ancient Japanese tradition one who folds a thousand cranes can have his wish fulfilled. These origami symbol used to children who perform them and to those who visit the monument to signify their wish for a world without nuclear war, was connected to the monument that Sadako died as a result of induced leukemia by irradiation, before she could make a thousand paper cranes herself.
