The nearby Blair Athol Coal Mine was the first mine in Australia to use the open cut method of mining coal & this shovel was an original piece of equipment used at the mine. Its bucket had a capacity of 1.5 cubic metres & was used to remove overburden then coal, which it loaded into trucks.

The shovel had a team of three. The driver, a trigger boy who ensured the bucket opened to dump coal into the trucks & the fireman.

The large bucket beside the steam shovel belonged to a dragline owned by Rio Tinto. This bucket had a capacity of 50 cubic metres or 33 times more than the steam shovel's bucket.
