From the old railway line ... this line, granted to the Compagnie des Charentes by the law of 23 March 1874, originally linked to Ruffec Niort.
The project was old and had initially intended to ensure the rail link between Nantes and Limoges, solution quickly abandoned due to the topography of the region crossed. After the adoption of the final route proposed by the Compaing engineer in 1879, the first work began and in 1881 the first batch was completed, the other three very advanced.
It was thought that the line could be commissioned in 1883 but a financial crisis would delay the opening to 23 February 1885. The official inauguration took place on 1 March 1885, attended by Minister of Public Works, Mr. Raynal. On 22 May 1977, the Melle section in Chef-Boutonne, 22 km long, was closed to traffic, downgraded by Ministerial Decree 29 January 1979, and registered the same year.
The last section of Niort to Melle saw its rail traffic stopped in January 1991, abandoning the service factory Rhône Poulenc Melle. ... Green tape.
The Green Ribbon
The layout of the old railway ride road, called green ribbon between Tauche, Mougon and Melle, was directed by the communities of municipalities of Celles-sur-Belle and Melle in 1999 and inaugurated September 18, 1999 in the presence of Ségolène Royal, MP.
Designed for hikers, horse riders and cyclists, through the play of cut and fill, the line between the two capitals Township alternates forest landscapes meadow slope offering great diversity of angles from this soft link, sometimes cashed, sometimes overhanging.
In addition, the green ribbon allows to decline other routes to the Abbey of Celles-sur-Belle, hamlets of the Card, New House, Virlebanc or Saint-Thibault, for example, or even to the tourism heritage

De l’ancienne voie ferrée… cette ligne, concédée à la Compagnie des Charentes par la loi du 23 mars 1874, reliait à l’origine Niort à Ruffec.
Le projet était ancien et avait pour objectif initial d’assurer la liaison ferroviaire entre Nantes et Limoges, solution vite abandonnée du fait de la topographie de la région traversée. Après l’adoption du tracé définitif proposé par l’ingénieur Compaing en 1879, les premiers travaux débutèrent et, en 1881, le premier lot fut achevé, les trois autres très avancés.
On pensait que la ligne pourrait être mise en service en 1883 mais une crise financière devait reporter l’ouverture au 23 février 1885. Son inauguration officielle eut lieu le 1er mars 1885, en présence du ministre des travaux publics, M. Raynal. Le 22 mai 1977, la section de Melle à Chef-Boutonne, longue de 22 km, fut fermée au trafic, déclassée par décret ministériel le 29 janvier 1979, et déposée la même année.
La dernière section de Niort à Melle a vu son trafic ferroviaire arrêté en janvier 1991, abandonnant ainsi la desserte de l’usine Rhône Poulenc de Melle.… au ruban vert.
Le ruban Vert
L’aménagement de l’ancienne voie ferrée en chemin de balade, dénommé ruban vert, entre Tauché, Mougon et Melle, a été réalisé par les communautés de communes de Celles-sur-Belle et Melle en 1999, et inauguré le 18 septembre 1999 en présence de Ségolène Royal, députée.
Destiné aux randonneurs pédestres, équestres et cyclistes, par le jeu des déblais et remblais, le tracé entre les deux chefs lieux de canton alterne les paysages en forêt ou à flanc de prairie offrant de grandes diversités d’angles de vue depuis cette liaison douce, tantôt encaissée, tantôt en surplomb.
De plus, le ruban vert permet de décliner d’autres itinéraires vers l’abbaye de Celles-sur-Belle, les hameaux de la Carte, Maison Neuve, Virlebanc ou Saint-Thibault, par exemple, ou bien encore vers le patrimoine touristique
