Annelies Marie 'Anne' Frank (1929-1945) was a young Jewish writer, and one of the most well known victims of the Holocaust. She was born in Frankfurt, Germany, but moved to Amsterdam with her family when she was 4 years old. In 1942, after the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II, Anne went into hiding with her family and several other people in some concealed rooms in a canal-side building where Anne's father worked. They spent two years in that house, during which Anne wrote of her experiences in her wartime diary The Diary of a Young Girl.
The family was eventually betrayed and captured, and 15-year-old Anne Frank died in a concentration camp in 1945.
Her wartime diary was published in 1947, and has since been translated into more than 60 languages.

The house which they had hid in over those years was converted into a museum which opened in 1960. It preserves the family's hiding place, and has a permanent exhibition on the life and times of Anne Frank. The museum gets over 1 million visitors a year.
