In June 1770 the Montpellier city fathers made the decision to erect a fountain place de la Canourgue. It takes three years for the sculptor Etienne Dantoine to beselectedtodothe work.

The work is executed in the sculpture workshop located on Rue des Etiens. It is carved from a block of marble from Carrara.
