Catherine Church is a Roman Catholic church in the center of the Dutch city of Eindhoven , dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria.
The church is located at Catherine's Square, at the beginning of Stratumseind ??and was built to replace the dilapidated medieval St. Catherine's Church.
The neo-Gothic building was designed by Pierre Cuypers and is considered an early highlight in his career. Construction began in 1861 and was completed in 1867. The cost of construction amounted to fl. 279,000.
Cuypers incorporated in this design a lot of ideas about symbolism of the Catholic writer Joseph Alberdingk Thijm . The most striking feature of the church are the two towers, both of which are 73 meters high and at examples of French Gothic architecture are different in shape, called a male and a female tower, the name David Tower and Mary Tower. Cuypers drew this inspiration from the cathedral of Chartres . The towers are part of the double tower front . The many rose windows refer to Saint Catherine, whose attribute is a wheel. Notwithstanding Alberdingk Thijms ideas the church is not oriented and the choir facing west.
