This original Golden Fleece pump stands outside the former Scott's Hotel which was built in the 1890s during the gold boom years in Steiglitz. The gold ran out and low scale mining ceased altogether in 1941. The hotel continued to run, and eventually sold Golden Fleece petroleum products which had been marketed in Australia from 1913. The first fuel pumps became available in 1920.
Golden Fleece was acquired by Caltex in 1981 and no longer exists as a brand.
Steiglitz is now a ghost town. Scott's Hotel became a private residence, and it has been many decades since fuel was last available here.
