Blue Lake is a crater lake, located in an extinct volcano that last erupted about 4,500 years ago.
It is approximately 70m deep and over 1000m in length.
The lake has a capacity of 36000 megalitres, and is used as the water supply for the town of Mount Gambier.
No one has fully explained the phenomenon of the bright blue colour, but it is thought to be possible due to the formation of calcium carbonate crystals at about 20 degrees Celsius, which then scatter blue light waves.
