Der Stephansdom ist eines der bekanntesten Wahrzeichen von Wien. Es gibt viele Sagen und Legenden, die mit dem Stephansdom zu tun haben. Eine davon erklärt, warum der Nordturm unvollendet geblieben ist:
Hans Puchsbaum, der am Bau des Stephansdoms beteiligt war, hatte sich in Maria, die Tochter des Baumeisters verliebt. Der Baumeister war gegen diese Beziehung und wollte ihm die Tochter nur zur Frau geben, wenn der Nordturm innerhalb eines Jahres fertiggestellt würde. Das war nicht zu schaffen. Also schloss Puchsbaum einen Pakt mit dem Teufel. Der Teufel versprach, dass der Nordturm innerhalb eines Jahres fertig sein würde und verlangte als Gegenleistung, dass Hans Puchsbaum in dieser Zeit niemals den Namen Gottes, der Jungfrau Maria oder eines anderen Heiligen aussprechen sollte. Puchsbaum willigte ein und der Bau ging rasch voran. Eines Tages stand Hans Puchsbaum hoch oben auf dem Gerüst und sah unten seine geliebte Maria vorbeigehen. Sie sah nicht nach oben, also rief er "Maria!". In diesem Augenblick stürzte das Gerüst ein und riss Hans Puchsbaum mit in die Tiefe. Seine Leiche wurde nie gefunden und der Bau des Nordturms wurde für immer eingestellt.

St. Stephen's Cathedral is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Vienna. There are many myths and legends that have to do with the St. Stephen's Cathedral. One explains why the north tower was left unfinished:
Hans Puchsbaum, who was involved in the construction of St. Stephen's Cathedral, had fallen in love with Maria, the daughter of the builder. The builder was against this relationship and said that he would agree to their marriage only if the north tower was completed within a year. That was impossible to accomplish. So Puchsbaum made a pact with the devil. The devil promised that the north tower would be finished within a year and demanded in return that Hans Puchsbaum should never pronounce the name of God, the Virgin Mary or other saints within this year. Puchsbaum agreed, and the construction went ahead rapidly. One day Hans Puchsbaum stood high up on the scaffolding and saw his beloved Maria passing the cathedral. She did not look up, so he called "Maria". At that moment the scaffolding collapsed and Hans Puchsbaum fell down to the ground. His body was never found and the construction of the north tower was ceased forever.
