Pioneer Mill Company No. 1 is an 0-4-2T built for 30" railroads. The following text is found on an interpretive sign on site.
This steam locomotive, named Lahaina, was one of the first locomotives purchased by the Pioneer Mill Company when it converted from ox carts to locomotives in 1883.
"The Press has been informed by the engineer of the Pioneer Mill Co., that carriage of cane by railway from Ka'anapali has been substituted for ox-teaming, and that fine and extensive crops are in progress..."

The plantation trains were small and nimble because they were sent into newly harvested fields on temporary track to pick up cane. The locomotives were designed to be fuel with wood or coal, and in 1919 they were converted to oil.
At the end of 1952, Pioneer Mill converted entirely to trucks for hauling cane and the railroad equipment was sold.
The Lahaina was badly damaged in a fire in 1961. It was returned to Lahaina on October 13, 2011 as a donation from the Allen and Lenabelle Davis Foundation.
