Het Museum de Fundatie bezit en beheert een omvangrijke collectie beeldende kunst die door voormalig Boymans directeur Dirk Hannema bijeen werd gebracht en later belangrijke aanvullingen kende met onder meer de kunstcollectie van de Provincie Overijssel.
Het Paleis aan de Blijmarkt is een neoclassicistische pand dat is gebouwd tussen 1838 en 1841, naar een ontwerp van de Haagse architect Eduard Louis de Coninck. Het deed dienst als Paleis van Justitie en bood later onder meer onderdak aan de Rijksplanologische Dienst. In 2004/2005 is het Paleis aan de Blijmarkt naar een ontwerp van architect Gunnar Daan verbouwd tot kunstmuseum. In 2012/2013 is het pand spectaculair uitgebreid. De ellipsvormige opbouw op het dak wordt door Museum de Fundatie zelf ‘Het OOG’, of ‘de Wolk’ genoemd maar nu al circuleren er tal van ander bijnamen:‘het ei’, ‘de ufo’, ‘de zeppelin’ of ‘het ruimteschip’. De uitbreiding, een ontwerp van Hubert-Jan Henket (Bierman Henket Architecten), biedt plaats aan twee tentoonstellingszalen met een gezamenlijk oppervlak van bijna 1000m². Een groot ovaal raam geeft uitzicht op de historische binnenstad.
Aan de buitenkant is de opbouw bekleed met 55.000 wit-blauwe tegels. De uitbreiding wordt als een keramische wolk optisch opgetild en zweeft boven het oorspronkelijke neoclassicistische gebouw. Op de grens tussen de middeleeuwse stadskern en de 19e-eeuwse singels is het vernieuwde museum een hedendaags baken en een icoon voor de toekomst.
The Museum "de Fundatie" owns and manages an extensive art collection that was brought together by former Boymans director Dirk Hannema and experienced later significant additions including the art collection of the Province of Overijssel.
The Palace on the Blijmarkt is a neoclassical building that was constructed between 1838 and 1841, to a design by the Hague architect Eduard Louis de Coninck. It served as a courthouse and later offered shelter to the National Planning Department. In 2004/2005, the Palace on the Blijmarkt was turned into a museum by architect Gunnar Daan. In 2012/2013 the building was expanded spectacularly. The ellipse-shaped structure on the roof is called the 'EYE' by the staff of Museum de Fundatie itself, but already numerous other nicknames are circulating: "the cloud", "the egg", "UFO", "Zeppelin" or "the spaceship. The expansion, designed by Hubert-Jan Henket (Bierman Henket Architects), can accommodate two exhibition halls with a total area of ??nearly 1000 square meters. A large oval window gives a view over the historic center of Zwolle.
On the outside the building is clad in 55,000 white-blue tiles. The extension is a ceramic optical cloud lifted and floats above the original neoclassical building. On the border between the medieval city center and the 19th-century canals the new museum is a contemporary landmark and an icon for the future.
