"Germania is the personification of the German nation or the Germans as a whole, most commonly associated with the Romantic Era and the Revolutions of 1848, though the figure was later used by Imperial Germany.
Germania is usually shown as a robust woman with long, flowing, reddish-blonde hair and wearing armour. She often wields the "Reichsschwert" (imperial sword), and possesses a mediaeval-style shield that sometimes bears the image of a black eagle on a gold field. Additionally, she is sometimes shown as carrying or wearing the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire.
In post-1918 images, the banner she holds is the black-red-gold flag of modern Germany, but in depictions from 1871 to 1918 it is the black-white-red flag of the German Empire."

This statue is located on Germaniaplatz in Essen-Borbeck.
It was created by the German sculptor Leo Müsch (* 26. Februar 1846 in Düsseldorf; † 6. Januar 1911 in Düsseldorf).
This monument reminds of the fallen of the Deutschen Einigungskriege.
On one side of the statue you can find three names of the fallen in the war of 1866.
"Als deutsche Einigungskriege (gelegentlich auch Reichseinigungskriege genannt) bezeichnet man die Kriege, die zwischen 1864 und 1871 zur Entstehung des „kleindeutschen Nationalstaates“ (1871, Deutsches Reich) unter der Führung Preußens geführt haben. Zu den deutschen Einigungskriegen zählt man den Deutsch-Dänischen Krieg im Jahre 1864, den Preußisch-Österreichischen Krieg (auch Deutscher Krieg, Deutsch-Deutscher Krieg oder Bruderkrieg) im Jahre 1866 und zuletzt den Deutsch-Französischen Krieg 1870/1871."
