This lonely grave located beside the Princes Highway, midway between Port Fairy and Yambuk is inscribed with the following;
George Watmore
Speared by Blacks
1842

The grave has a rock border also.
George would have been an early pioneer in the area as Victoria was first settled in 1834 and nearby Port Fairy (or Belfast as it was then known) was not surveyed until In 1843.
George apparently met his death after being speared by local aboriginals, most probably as rare white casualty of the Eumerella Wars (visit link)
The cross has a small plaque attached inscribed with 'Renewed 1-12-98 by R Scott, Portland'
