Sorrento is an upper class seaside town on the shores of Port Phillip Bay in the Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne.

Sullivan Bay here was the site of the first European settlement in Victoria in the early 1800s.

George Coppin, an entrepreneur, started developing the area as a fashionable seaside resort town for Melbourne's wealthy in the 1870s, and named the town after Sorrento in Italy which has a population of 16500.
