The lobster is one of Australia's Top 10 "Big Things".
The Big Lobster Tourist complex was built in 1979. The idea was derived from the USA in the 1970s, and the lobster was built as a drawcard to promote the local seafood, wine and cheese of Kingston in South Australia.
The Big Lobster has an internal steel frame which is coated with fibreglass. The 4-tonne 17-metre-tall structure took 6 months to build.
Legend has it that the lobster ended up so big due to a mistake in reading the plans, which were originally designed in feet but constructed in metres leading to a lobster that is three times the intended size!
