EN: The Central Library of Zürich is located in a listed building next to the Predigerkirche. It was formed in 1914 from the merger of the municipal library with the Canton Library, which was also the university library at the same time.

The Canton Library dated back to the library of the Canons Regular of St. Felix and Regula, first mentioned in 1259. The library remained even after the Reformation, but lost the largest part of the collection in an incident of book burning in 1525. As of 1532, the collection was expanded again, first with the private library of Huldrych Zwingli. 1831 Canons was dissolved and the 3,500 volumes formed the basis of the newly founded Canton library, which was extended with the holdings of the University and various other schools. In 1863, the very extensive library of the dissolved monastery Rheinau was also added with many medieval manuscripts.

The public library opened in 1634 and soon enlarged rapidly, thanks to donations from the citizens. Originally started as a universal collection, the emphasis was laid on the humanities and Turicensia after the establishment of various special libraries.

1914, the merger of the two libraries was decided in a plebiscite, which opened in 1917 on the present site. In the 1990s, the main parts of the collection were moved to the newly added adjacent building and the original building was renovated. Today it houses the most special collections of the library.

DE: Die Zentralbibliothek von Zürich befindet sich in einem denkmalgeschützten Gebäude gleich neben der Predigerkirche. Sie entstand 1914 aus der Zusammenlegung der Stadtbibliothek mit der Kantonsbibliothek, die gleichzeitig auch die Universitätsbibliothek war.

Die Kantonsbibliothek ging auf die 1259 erstmals erwähnte Bibliothek des Chorherrenstifts St. Felix und Regula zurück. Die Bibliothek blieb auch nach der reformation bestehen, verlor aber beim Büchersturm 1525 den grössten teil des Bestandes. Ab 1532 wurde die Sammlung wieder ausgebaut, zuerst mit der Privatbibliothek von Huldrych Zwingli. 1831 wurde das Chorherrenstift aufgelöst und die rund 3500 Bände bildeten den Grundstock der neu gegründeten Kantonsbibliothek, die mit den Beständen der Universität und diversen anderen Schulen aufgestockt wurde. 1863 wurde auch die sehr umfangreiche Bibliothek des aufgelösten Klosters Rheinau mit vielen mittelalterlichen Handschriften übernommen.

Die Stadtbibliothek wurde 1634 eröffnetund vergrösserte sich dank Spenden aus der Bürgerschaft rasch. Ursprünglich als universelle Sammlung begonnen, wurde nach Gründung diverser Spezialbibliotheken der Schwerpunkt auf Geisteswissenschaften und Turicensia verlegt.

1914 wurde in einer Volksabstimmung die Zusammenlegung der beiden Bibliotheken beschlossen, die 1917 am heutigen Ort eröffnet wurde. In den 1990er Jahren wurde der Hauptteil der Sammlung in den angrenzenden Neubau verlegt und das ursprüngliche Gebäude renoviert. Heute befinden sich darin die meisten Spezialsammlungen.
