The Great or St. Mary's Church is one of the oldest and most famous monuments in Meppel.
After Meppel was independent church community in the year 1422, began the following year with the construction of the Big or Mary's church.
From that time dates the name Mary's Church . In 1459 the present church choir was consecrated by the bishop of Utrecht. In 1491 and in 1504 the last altars were placed in the church.
The tower of the church is a monumental tower in Gothic style in the second half of the 15th century. The profiled entrance is from 1540 , the open dome of 1827. Klokkenstoel with clock A. Putt, 1611, diameter 154.4 cm. The city venture 1617 is drawn after 1796 at the church and serves as a vestry . The straight gable is topped by a Louis XV ornament.
