[EN]

The basilica of Saint-Martin de Tours is a religious building whose crypt contains the tomb of Martin de Tours and the Ossuaries of four saints.

The ancient collegiate church Saint-Martin de Tours, dates from the XI century, was abandoned, vandalized and turned into stables in 1793.
In 1802 it was demolished by caution because it became dangerous.

A new building, the current basilica was built between 1886 and 1902 in the neo-Byzantine style by the architect Victor Laloux. She has been inaugurated in 1890.
It is a limestone building, granite and marble, slate-covered. For the wall paintings, the architect addressed Pierre Fritel, and decorative work was done with the help of the painter and decorator Adrien Lavieille, son of Eugene Lavieille. The building was consecrated as a basilica July 4, 1925.

The body of Saint-Martin, died at Candes, was transported to Tours in 397 and was buried in a sarcophagus behind the altar of the new basilica.

A wooden box, found in the statue contains the bones of Saint-Martin and three other bishops of Tours : Saint-Brice, Saint-Perpète and Saint-Gregory.
It was to restore the statue that it had been removed from its base.
