A tribute to the courage with a known history of reminder. Located on Avenue A Pouvanaa Opaa at the intersection of Rue des Hairy Tahitians, stands the monument to the dead in honor of the Polynesian soldiers who died in battle during the two world wars and during the wars in Korea, Madagascar, Indochina and north Africa. The native soldiers were called at the time the "Hairy Tahitians." During World War II, nearly 90 Polynesians of the Pacific Battalion soldiers were killed and a special tribute to their sacrifice and their memory is delivered on 8 May each year.
