It describes brief history of Turkish mediterranean flora in relation with human behaviour and climatic changes in the past and introduces several samples of Cyprus flora which are able to survive in Istanbul climate.

Evolutionary Development ot Cyprus Vegetation

As per record of Eratosthenes a Cyrene traveler, philosopher and geographer who lived between 275-195 BC, the majority of the land in Cyprus including the arid Mesarian Savanna was covered by the forests.

The destruction of the forests caused the changing process of the vegetation first to Maguis (Macchia) flora which constituted by 4-6m tall shrubs such as: Arbutus andrachne, Pistacia terebinthus (Nettle tree), Olea europea (Olive tree), styraix oficinalis, and Quercus coccifera (Oak tree), and then to Garik flora which are less than 3m tall, such as: Cistus (Spruce tree) Genista sphaoelata, Calycotome villosa, and Pistacia lentiscus.

The heavy destruction continued to force the flora changing into more herbacesous plant species like sarcopotenium spinosum Fumana spp, Micromeria spp, Thymus capitatus. Besides the imported plants are the magical ornamental display along the parks, gardens and streets. Bauhinin variegate from India, a new world tropical plant Bougainville spectakilis, Grevillea robuste from Australia, Jacarandamimosigolia, Palm trees, Agave, Cactuses, Silver wattle (Acacla) and Eucalyptus trees are very often used for fine artlands and in Cyprus.
