The port of Philipsburg is the main economic engine of the city and the island and is the 9th major port and destinations of the Caribbean. Its full name is "Dr. Wathey AC Cruise & Cargo Facility", in honor of Claude Wathey when St. Maarten became one of the main tourist destinations in the Caribbean. The port was constructed in the late 1950s and expanded, with many sections: -The cruise terminal (John Craane Cruise Terminal), which can hold up to 4 ships at a time. -The tax-free shopping center Harbour Point Village. -The storage section (The Captain David Cargo Quay). The geographic position in the eastern Caribbean to St. Maarten has become a trade center. -The Captain Hodge Wharf is where visitors get off when they take a water taxi.
