The remains of an unknown 1800s ship were unearthed and beached by the force of Hurricane George in 1998. Today this shipwreck is on display outside of the Fort Gaines state historic site on Dauphin Island.

A sign at the shipwrecked remains on display reads as follows:

"19TH-CENTURY SHIPWRECK

The huge timbers you see are a ship’s keel section that was washed ashore in the fury of Hurricane Georges in the fall of 1998. The remains formed the bottom ridgeline of the ship and would've held the ribs of the ship's hull. During an expert analysis of the materials and construction, it was indicated that the ship was built in the 1800s or earlier. However, the purpose of the ship, it's origin, and the fate of the crew is unknown."
