The inscription on the plaque reads:
"Capt. Arsene Hubert Hodge
1900-1994
“Home is the sailor home from sea”
Robert Louis Stevenson
Captain Arsene Hubert Hodge is proudly remembered on Dutch St. Maarten for a lifetime of dedication as a seafarer and boat captain.
Countless stories are told locally about his exploits at sea and the memorable journeys he made between the Dutch Windward Islands, first as skipper of the 16-ton government owned vessel “Trixie” and later as one of the best-known captains of the romantic schooner the “Blue Peter”
The care of the passengers foremost on his mind, Captain Hodge braved sea and storm on numerous occasions, receiving many citations in the process.
Captain Hodge retired from the sea in the 1970’s to run a guest house just a stone’s throw from this commemorative plaque.
In 1972 he was also honoured by Government leader, Dr. A.C. Wathey and the island government of St. Maarten with the naming of the Captain Hodge's Pier in his honour.
He received a coveted knighthood from Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands on April 19th, 1983.
Captain Arsene Hubert Hodge was laid to rest on June 15th, 1994."
