The oldest surviving church building in the town is on the Oude Rijksweg in Rouveen and dates from 1641.
In 1282 the monastery was given permission to build a church in Rouveen, with all rights attaching thereto.
The building was erected on a site near the present Scholenweg.
In all likelihood, this church was dedicated to St. Nicholas, patron saint of fishermen and miners. Later the building was moved to the Olde Path, until in 1641 the present church in Monnikenslag came about in the center of the village.
Over the centuries there were several renovations and adaptations. Was applied as a wooden ceiling in 1900 and in 1927 they got access to an organ.
The church bells that were looted during World War II, were replaced by new ones. During a restoration in 1960 were made to the north and south doors.
The number of seats in the church was raised to 700, while there are another 300 were created in the service building.
