"TWYNHOLM showcased the result of over five years of hard work on Saturday afternoon with the official opening of the village’s Millennium Garden.
It all began with a questionnaire asking for projects for the millennium celebrations, during which a garden was proposed and Twynholm Action Group formed to deliver their vision. The group spent two chilly winters making plans, fuelled by tea and scones.
The land on which the garden stands was acquired with the co-operation of the late Bobby McCormick and the help of the Coulthard family, who allowed the group to adjust the perimeter of their museum car park.
Work started after the project gained £10,000 in funding from Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Community Regeneration Fund, with further awards of £1000 from Solway Heritage and Lloyds TSB and £300 from Lothian, Borders and Angus Co-op.
Plans were drawn up by R & C Lewis, then adopted and adapted into its present form by Mr. J Anderson, with the help of his JCB.
Local farmers and land owners supplied granite boulders and other useful landscape gardening materials, and expertise on planting came from the former principal at Threave School of Gardening.
Three seats were donated, and following an appeal to sponsor plants, Gowanbrae Nursery and Mutehill Garden Centre obliged.
With only one entrance to the park, the group decided another was required, which led to their “crowning feature” - a traditionally built bridge created by D & E Shuttleworth and donated by Mr & Mrs A Irving in memory of their son Sandy.
A half-scale F1 car, a chainsaw carving by Rodney Holland of Moniaive is a fun feature for children and takes pride of place along with the working pump and well and the largest sundial in Dumfries and Galloway, a tribute to the late George Higgs."
