WWI Memorial Gateway at the University of Rhode Island Main Campus - South Kingstown, RI - Freestanding Arches on Waymarking.com

In South Kingstown, at the formal entrance to the University of Rhode Island, is this pair of free-standing stone arches.

The entrance is along Upper College Road, which has an intersection with Rhode Island Route 138 where there is a stone sign for the university. Just south is an intersection with Campus Avenue/Briar Lane. The pair of arches are over the two sidewalks on either side of Upper College Road and bookend the road, instead. The stone is a dark granite. There is a plaque on the right (east) one with the following text:

alumni and students of
Rhode Island State College

as a token of their loyalty
to their Alma Mater.

o the occasion of the
80th Anniversary"

An article found has a transcription of the speech made at the gateway rededication ceremony. The gateway cost $3000 to build in 1928. In 1917-18, the enrollment to the university was 562, while the number of me who served in World War I from the university was 334. Of these, 23 lost their lives. The rededication ceremony revealed a new plaque to replace the previous plaque which has been missing for years.

Behind the left arch is a boulder with a plaque on it stating that this a World War I memorial.
