In South Kingstown, on the main campus of the University of Rhode Island, is this statue of Rhody the Ram, the mascot for the university.

The sculpture is in front of one entrance to the student union building, southwest of the campus quad. We entered the university through the main entrance at Upper College Road from the intersection with Rhode Island Route 138. We parked at a public lot east of the Fine Arts Building. There may be closer lots.

The statue is short, about 4 ft high. The ram, made of stone, looks east toward the walkway and stands on a stone base. At the front of the base are the words, "Gift of the Class of 1958."

A web page about Westerly Granite states that the "granite base donated by the late Angelo Gencarelli ’22 who was also from Westerly."

URI adopted the rams as the mascot in 1923, though its first appearance was in 1929, to represent the agricultural heritage of the university. At times at athletic games, a real ram showed up and sometimes was housed on campus. Now, a costumed figure is at the games.

This statue is often featured in photographs of the campus.
