Das Bauerndorf Großwolde wurde im 12. Jahrhundert aufgrund des steigenden Grundwassers auf die höher gelegene Geest verlegt. In diesem Zuge wurde auch die Vorgängerkirche aus Backsteinen abgetragen und am heutigen Standort neu errichtet. Nach der Reformation wechselte die Gemeinde um 1560 zum reformierten Bekenntnis.
Um die Kirche herum befinden sich viele Gräber, meistens aus dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert. Der "neue" Friedhof der Gemeinde liegt südlich der Kirche auf der anderen Straßenseite.
The farming village Großwolde was transferred to the higher up Geest in the 12th century, due to rising groundwater. In this context, the original brick church was demolished and rebuilt at its present location. After the Reformation, the community moved around 1560 to the Reformed confession.
Around the church there are many graves, mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The "new" cemetery of the church community is south of the church, on the other side of the street.
