Alice Springs Civic Centre was opened by the then Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Paul Everingham, in March 1980. Built from a design by local architect, Andrew McPhee, the foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Fraser in March, 1979. The buildings comprise the administration offices, council chambers, civic reception centre, library and public ablution block. (

Fran Kilgariff is the daughter of Bernie Kilgariff (1923 – 2010), an Australian politician who was one of the founders of the Country Liberal Party and served as a member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly which included a stint as Deputy Majority Leader before being elected to the Australian Senate. She has been the Mayor of Alice Springs Town Council from May 2000 to March 2008 and she also ran as a Labor Party candidate in the 2005 Northern Territory general election. She is now general manager of operations for Ninti One Limited. (
