The fountain in the center of Valendas was built in 1760. It is said to be the largest wooden fountain of Europe. Until the late 19th century the fountain was the only water supply for the village, some households in the immediate surroundings of the fountain were depending on it until the 1930s.

The colored statue atop the column depicts a mermaid, the origin is unknown, but it was already fart of the first fountain in 1760, it was renovated in 1952. The upper basin has a size of 4.8 to 7.8 meters and a depth of 40cm. The basin has a capacity of 15.000 liters. The steps around the basin were built for the sheep that were watered here regularly. The second, roofed basin with a size of 3.5 to 1.3 meters was the wash house of the village.

The wood of the basins has to be replaced about every thirty years, this was done in 2011.
