The park which contains the sundial used to be within the Akashi castle, constructed in 1619 by Lord Ogasawara Tadamasa. Supposedly the construction of the castle was directed by the great swordsman Miyamoto Musashi ("Book of Five Rings"). It is within a short walking distance of JR Akashi station.
