The Corpo de Fuzileiros was the first Portuguese military unit officially formed as a "modern" combat force - paid, organized and maintained by the Crown - in 1618.
Structure:
1st Marine Battalion;
2nd Marine Battalion;
Naval Police Unit;
Special Actions Detachment;
Fire Support Company;
Tactical Transports Support Company.
They played a role in several wars including the 1961-1975 Portuguese African War, where they were one of the three special forces in operation (together with the Army Comandos and Air Force Paratroopers).
Their school unit is not far from Barreiro and so the location is perfectly adequate to this homage to the unit.
