Zoolights is an annual tradition at the Phoenix Zoo going into its 14th year this year. It has been an annual family tradition for us too. It is open each night between Thanksgiving and the first weekend after New Year's Day.
Each year has a different theme, with old displays incorporated into brand new lighting displays. Preparing for the display takes the staff an entire year. Last year featured nearly 2 million lights.
The display is consists of the Arizona Trail (which is a sedate lighted display among the Arizona exhibit), and the main walk around the lake with its synchronized music and light display. There is also a talking 'animal' just for the kids near the entrance. Horse drawn carriage ride is available in another lighted area. Grab a hot cocoa, some kettlecorn and come out for the fun.
The place is usually packed on weekends. Best viewing times are weekdays or on the special corporate events, if your company has a night out there. Zoolights requires tickets. Last year tickets cost between $5-7, depending on if they were advanced purchase or not. This light display is worth it. A great family outing or date night.
