Worthington Park has been a popular area for recreation since the late Mrs. Worthington donated the land in 1900. Until 1950 it was known as Sale Park, but was later re-named Worthington Park during the Golden Jubilee (when an oak was planted by Viscount Leverhulme) in memory of the benefactor, Mrs Worthington. link

Her coronation, on June 2, 1953, was the first to be televised. The publicity generated by this entry into the modern world of communication led to many communities celebrating the event. These gates will have been used by many, many people since they were erected 61 years ago.

The gates are of metal construction supported by stone pillars. Each of the gates has a roundel in the middle of metal bars. The left hand gate has the letters E II R and the right hand gate the date 1953 The letters stand for the Latin Title Elizabeth Regina II (Queen Elisabeth II).
