The salt is mined from rock salt layers several meters thick. In France, only mine in St Nicolas Varangéville, Lorraine, is still active.
Access to the mine is by a vertical well. In the basement, a network of tunnels was dug, leaving in place the pillars of salt that ensure the stability of the land.
Le sel est extrait de couches de sel gemme de plusieurs mètres d’épaisseur. En France, seule la mine de St Nicolas à Varangéville, en Lorraine, est encore en activité.
L’accès à la mine se fait par un puits vertical. Dans le sous-sol, un réseau de galeries a été creusé, laissant en place des piliers de sel qui assurent la stabilité des terrains.
