Banyuls sur Mer is a coastal resort in the extreme south east corner of France near to the Spanish border. It lies in the foothills of the eastern edge of the Pyrenees mountain range.
It is located in the French Pyrénées-Orientales department, most of which was until 1659, part of the Principality of Catalonia and many people still use Catalan as a second language.
It is a famous wine growing area, especially for the sweet wine Banyuls.
The central part of the monument has a painted tile mural facing a stone block. Painted on to the tiles are scenes of the English town of Settle on the left hand side and the Czechoslovakian town of Kralupy nid Vitavou, Czech Republic on the right.
The two pictures are separated by 2 painted intertwined ribbons, one in the colours of the French flag, the other in the colours of the area of Catalonia. On each side of the main mural are two smaller ones depicting bunches of grapes from the locality.
