A large log of Mississippi petrified wood is on display outside of the Old Courthouse Museum in downtown Vicksburg MS.
This tree was part of what is now known as the Mississippi Petrified Forest, formed when an ancient river flooded and knocked down a HUGE number of trees. The trees formed a log jam, and, over time, sank into the river and were buried by silt and debris, where they became petrified.
