A plaque above the fountain reads (in German):

Rudolf Koller
Hundebrunnen
Zum 100. todestag des Schweizer Tiermalers
5. Januar 2005

[English Translation]
Rudolf Koller
Dog fountain
On the 100th anniversary [of the death] of the Swiss animal painter
January 5, 2005

The following information about the fountain is from the Hotel Adler (visit link) website:

"On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the death of Rudolf Koller, the Hotel Adler fitted a stand-up bar for dogs, consisting of cast-iron trough, to the outer wall of the house. Since in addition to horses and cows, Koller also painted the straying dogs of Niederdorf. Sophisticated technology means that the water is renewed every 30 minutes. So thanks to the dog drinking fountain of the Hotel Adler, you can also invite your dog for a drink in Niederdorf."

The following information about Rudolf Koller is from Wikipedia (visit link) :

"Rudolf Koller (born 21 May 1828, Zürich; d. 5 January 1905, Zürich) was a Swiss painter. He is associated with a realist and classicist style and also with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Koller's style is similar to that of the realist painters Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Considered Switzerland's finest animal painter, Koller is rated in the same class as George Stubbs, Rosa Bonheur and Théodore Gericault. While his reputation was based on his paintings of animals, he was a sensitive and innovative artist whose well-composed works in the plein air tradition, including Swiss mountain landscapes, are just as finely executed.

He has been described as "the painter of the Swiss national animal", because of his paintings of cows in Swiss landscapes. Koller is considered, along with Frank Buchser and Gustave Castan, to be one of the most important Swiss painters of the 19th century. The Gotthardpost, or The St Gotthard Mailcoach, is one of his most famous paintings. It depicts a mail coach, drawn by white horses, speeding along a mountain road."
