IV/III a.c. atesta a importancia estratégica deste rochedo.

"The Pillar Mountain is an extrusion that due to their granitic lithologic characteristics, resisted the erosion over time, this huge granitic monolith is considered the largest in the Iberian Peninsula.

This huge monolith and its abrupt slopes. served strategically to build the castle of Lanhoso, these morphological characteristics contributed greatly to its impregnability, the existence of a fort dating from the III / IV century B.C. attests to the strategic importance of this rock.

This massive granitic outcrop is located in the Central Iberian Zone (the innermost zone of Variscan Chain). This area is generally characterized by the existence of rocks deformed and affected by very high degree of metamorphism and also by the predominance of granitic rocks. Thus, in the Pilar Mountain, in similarity of the entire northwest region of Portugal, predominate granitic rocks that settled in the earth's crust during the Variscan orogeny. The bedrock consists of granite biotitic with rare muscovite and porphyritic medium to fine grain. Regarding its shape geomorphologic it is in a dome, a dome, which has the name of Pousadela Granite. In geological terms the granite that constitutes this dome is transitional between the Braga granite and granite Agrela (Geological map of Portugal No 5-D, Braga, esc. 1:50000)."
