This fountain, Vasabrunnen (or Vasa's well) was completed in 1926 and is by the sculptor Nils Sjögren. It stands in Larmtorget in Kalmar

The panels display scenes depicting the rise to power of Gustav I of Sweden, known as Gustav Vasa, who led the rebellion in 1523 which resulted in Sweden breaking away from the Kalmar Union of Denmark, Sweden and Norway which had been established in 1397.

  1. Gustav sets sail
  2. Gustav lands at Kalmar
  3. Gustav, labelled "Liberator Patria" calls the Swedes to arms. In the background a woman hits a man on the backside with a shovel, chasing him out of a doorway. Perhaps he is not up for the fight.
  4. The Swedes rally to arms, calling for freedom - "Frihet är det bastating".
  5. Gustav leads an army
  6. Victorious, Gustav arrives in Stockholm

On top of the column are figures of David slaying Goliath.
