Linlithgow obtained it's Royal Burgh status in 1389 from Robert II. "A royal burgh was a type of Scottish burgh which had been founded by, or subsequently granted, a royal charter. Although abolished in law in 1975, the term is still used by many former royal burghs." --Wikipedia

Although royal burghs have been abolished, Linlithgow continues to use the term. According to the inscribed stone, Linlithgow celebrated its 600th anniversary as a royal burgh in 1989. The inscribed stone reads:
