"Situated in West Princes Street Gardens The Ross Bandstand is an open-air theatre wih situated under the majestic Edinburgh Castle which provides a magnificent backdrop.

First built in 1877 and gifted to the city by William Henry Ross Chairman of the Distillers Company Ltd.

The Bandstand and terraced area were developed in 1935 and has since played host to many rock, pop and brass bands, plays, orchestras and classical concerts over the years.

It is now in need of redevelopment and plans are underway to create a new theatre in its place. Proposed designs have included a Leaf Shaped or Shell shaped canopy and a Grassy Knoll."

"The Ross Theatre (aka the Ross Band Stand) is the outdoor concert venue, with a capacity of 2000, in West Princes Street Gardens. The venue has an impressive backdrop of Edinburgh Castle and the green hilly area of Edinburgh Castle Gardens.

The current Ross Band Stand and terraced area was developed in 1935. The original facility on the site was a bandstand, built in 1877, gifted to the City by William Henry Ross, Chairman of the Distillers Company Ltd.

In September, the Ross is the setting for the annual Edinburgh International Festival Fireworks Concert. It also hosts ceilidhs, free jazz during the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, a concert at Hogmanay, and a range of other events including non-professional events and rock concerts. At the Fringe in 2010, Assembly pitched their Spiegel tent here.

You can hire the Ross Band Stand from the City of Edinburgh Council."
